Simple or Dramatic Maternity Portraits: Finding Your Style

Simple and dramatic maternity portraits can both feel like you. The useful question is which visual mood you want to remember: quiet and intimate, expressive and flowing, or a combination. For your session at Mamamiyo Photography’s Telok Kurau studio in Singapore, start with the photographs you respond to, then explain what you enjoy about them.

Choose a calm starting point

A simple portrait gives your expression and the shape of your bump room to be noticed. Light clothing, a quiet background and a small gesture can feel complete without adding many details. If that appeals to you, look for photographs where your eye goes first to the person rather than to the setting.

In this seated portrait, a beige bodysuit and knit cardigan, a relaxed smile and a small hand-to-chin gesture create a gentle starting point. A calm style does not require you to look serious or stand perfectly still. Tell us whether you prefer looking towards the camera, looking down or making a small, natural movement. Browse our maternity gallery for different examples.

Create drama with a photo composition

Photo composition: a floral arch surrounds the original maternity portrait.

A portrait can feel more dramatic through the scale of the setting, the shapes around you and the contrast between colours. In the photo composition above, the large floral arch frames mum and gives a soft pink gown a more elaborate setting. A relaxed smile can still be the centre of the picture.

If this is the style you like, send us the example beforehand so we can discuss photo composition options for your chosen portrait. For photographs that create shape and movement with fabric during the session, browse our fabric portraits. Tell us which details you enjoy—the colours, the framing or the sense of scale—rather than feeling you need to copy every part of a reference.

Keep your connection at the centre

A style can look polished and still feel personal. When your partner joins, the way you stand together, hold the bump or smile at one another can become the strongest part of the frame. There is room for an affectionate portrait within either a simple or a more expressive set.

Choose references for both their appearance and their feeling. You might like the colour in one photograph but prefer the closeness in another. Explain that distinction when you send your examples. If children are joining too, think about the family moments you want alongside your individual portraits, so the plan reflects everyone taking part.

Can I include both styles in one session?

Yes—you can plan one simple look and one more dramatic look. For example, choose a relaxed outfit with a clean background first, then a gown or flowing fabric for your second look.

Our maternity package includes two outfits in a one-hour studio session. Send us your favourite references beforehand so we can discuss the styling and confirm what is available.

For help choosing what to wear, read our maternity outfit guide and session preparation information.
