What to Wear for Your Family Photoshoot

Choosing clothes for family photographs does not need to become a shopping project. Start with comfortable pieces you already enjoy wearing, then look at how they work together. The aim is to make the people and their connection easy to notice, whether you are joining newborn portraits at home or a baby session in the studio.

Choose a small colour palette

Lay everyone's clothes together before deciding. Two or three colours can give a group a connected look without asking every person to wear an identical outfit. Cream, soft blue and beige are one possible combination; warm neutrals with a muted pink are another. These are starting points, not rules about what a family must wear.

Think about the theme you have chosen, too. If baby will be surrounded by a colourful setup, quieter family clothing can keep the portraits from feeling busy. Browse our family and sibling newborn photographs for examples of different colour combinations and interactions.

Coordinate the level of dress

Clothes often feel more harmonious when everyone is dressed for a similar occasion. A relaxed shirt and trousers may sit naturally beside a simple dress or comfortable separates. You do not need to put a toddler in stiff formal clothing just to make the outfits match.

Try sitting, bending and lifting your arms in your chosen clothes. Parents may be holding baby, sitting close together or cuddling an older child, so comfortable movement matters. Choose something you will feel at ease wearing while interacting with your family.

Keep everyday portraits simple, and plan themed looks deliberately

Plain fabrics and understated textures are an easy starting point. Large logos, strong lettering and busy prints can draw attention away from faces. Check the whole outfit, including sleeves, socks and accessories, rather than only the part you expect the camera to see.

A shared interest can also be part of the story. If you want a football-inspired portrait or another deliberate family theme, send your idea and outfit photographs beforehand. Matching shirts then become an intentional part of the picture rather than an unexpected distraction.

Help children feel comfortable in their clothes

Let older children try their outfits before the session. Check that waistbands, collars and hair accessories are comfortable, and choose clothes that allow them to move. A favourite snack or toy can be useful during breaks; there is no need to make the day feel like a test of perfect behaviour.

Prepare a spare top for a parent holding a young baby, and bring the usual baby essentials. Our session preparation guides explain what to bring for each type of shoot, including coordinated family clothing and feeding supplies.

Check what is provided before buying anything

Baby outfits and props are provided for the relevant baby sessions, while parents and siblings should prepare their own coordinated clothes. If you would like baby to wear a personal outfit or include a meaningful keepsake, send a photograph beforehand so we can discuss how it fits the planned setting.

The current package information explains the baby and family portrait arrangements. For a family-only session or a larger group, discuss the plans before booking so we can confirm what is suitable.

If you are choosing between two outfit combinations, contact Mamamiyo with a quick photograph of the clothes laid out together and your preferred theme. A clear plan leaves more room on the day for the expressions, cuddles and small interactions you want to remember.
